Since Gordon Moody set up more than 50 years ago, our understanding about the link between gambling addiction and mental health has grown.
We have seen this first-hand with the thousands of people who have been through our treatment services. The treatment programmes we offer at Gordon Moody have changed over the years as our understanding has increased and the needs of our clients have changed.
Of those applying for treatment at Gordon Moody in 2021/22, 62% struggled with emotional and mental health issues and 45% experienced suicidal thoughts – with many of them acting on these thoughts throughout their addiction journey.
RESEARCH
Our experience is backed up by research that indicates a strong association between gambling addiction and mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and personality disorders. Research suggests the prevalence of mood disorders and anxiety disorders is three times higher in gambling addicts than non-gamblers. Gambling addiction is also four times more likely to cause suicide than any other addiction.
TREATMENT PROGRAMMES
Addressing people’s mental health is therefore an integral part of our treatment programmes. Our services at Gordon Moody are delivered by highly qualified professionals, from accredited psychotherapists to clinical psychologists, who are trained and equipped to focus not just on the gambling addiction, but also on other addictions or mental and emotional health conditions.
OUR PURPOSE
Our purpose is to create safe, caring environments and programmes that empower our service users to make positive lasting changes and live fulfilled lives. All our interventions are tailored to our service users’ needs and our recovery builds on the individual’s strengths and capacity to flourish.
