We are expanding our residential rehabilitation capacity by opening a new Manchester service, in association with Anonymind’s Manchester clinic at Leon House. The opening is central to our strategy of providing residential treatment for those most severely affected by gambling harms.
The move comes at an important time as applications for treatment were 123% higher than that of the previous year. The location of the new clinic reflects a recent 15% rise in applications from the North West, more than any other area in the UK.
These numbers show a positive narrative in people getting help, but there is still a long way to go, with research showing that 1.4 million people in the UK are currently experiencing harm from their gambling. And yet for every person who accesses support, there are up to 160 others who could benefit but do not get the help they need.
Flagship treatment
We are committed to delivering rehabilitation treatment through our flagship treatment programme, based on a fourteen-week residential committment, but we recognise that this is not always suitable for everyone. We have hade significant investment in alternatives, including the Retreat and Counselling (R&C) courses – which are based on an intense but short-stay group retreat followed by regular follow up counselling sessions. Peer support and a safe space is a key aspect to our recovery programme.
Gordon Moody Chief Executive, Matthew Hickey, said:
“We firmly believe we should tackle gambling addiction together. And this is a perfect example of two expert organisations, Gordon Moody and Leon House, teaming up to meet the same goal of finding each individual the right level of treatment, at the right time, in the right place.
“It is possible to tackle gambling addiction and we are glad to be able to offer support to people who need it. Gordon Moody is a hidden charity, within a hidden addiction. It is a measure of the positive impact Gordon Moody has made, that we are expanding and reaching more people whose lives are negatively impacted by a gambling addiction. Establishing this partnership allows us to move into the North West, and it gives us far greater reach to those ready and committed to rebuilding their lives free from a gambling addiction.”
